RICHARD STRAUSS: Thus Spoke Zarathustra op. 30

Michaela Káčerková – Organ

Jan Kučera – Conductor

Exceptional organist Michaela Káčerková will perform the Concerto for organ and orchestra in A minor by Marco Enrico Bossi (1861 – 1925). This unique concert organist and improvisor composed this concerto in two versions, the second version will be performed at the concert. The catalogue of Bossi’s compositions is still largely unknown, except for the organ compositions.

Richard Strauss (1864 – 1946) wrote the symphonic poem Thus Spoke Zarathustra (Also sprach Zarathustra) in the year 1896 based on the book with the same name by philosopher Freidrich Nietzche. The poem is divided into nine parts, its names correspond to the names of the individual chapters of the book. The opus gained unprecedented popularity mainly thanks to its introductory part, which is one of the most well-known passages in the history of symphonic music and which was used in the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Michaela Káčerková is a prominent figure on the Czech organ scene. She graduated from the Prague Conservatory, the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague and Hochschule für Musik und Theater Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy Leipzig. She has participated in many master classes and has won awards in national and international interpretive competitions. She regularly performs concerts, works with many ensembles, soloists, orchestras and Baroque ensembles. Her repertoire includes music from the Renaissance to contemporary pieces. As a soloist she has performed in various European countries, the USA and Japan. Since the year 2014 she has been the artistic director of the International Organ Festival of J. C. F. Fischer.

Principal conductor of the Karlovy Vary Symphony Orchestra, pianist and composer Jan Kučera is one of the most versatile Czech artists. As a conductor he works with the foremost Czech orchestras, besides a classical repertoire he has recorded or conducted in public over one hundred symphonic pieces by contemporary Czech and international authors, often as a premiere. He is also involved in the opera scene. As a composer he creates symphonic, chamber, and song compositions as well as scenic music.
